From July 20, 2018, Dr Vishnu Priye, has taken over the responsibilities of the first Director of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Ranchi, which was established in year 2016 as an ‘Institute of National Importance under the act of Parliament’. He is on deputation from Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad where he is a Professor in Department of Electronics Engineering.
From January 1, 2015 till May 30, 2018, he was Dean (Research & Development) where he played a vital role in the administration. During his period the resource generated from R & D Projects reached about Rs 24 crores. There were more than 20 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) signed by him on behalf of the Institute with both National and International Universities and Industries. He was deeply involved with other core members and Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, in bringing out major changes that resulted in conversion of Indian School of Mines Dhanbad into Indian Institute of Technology on September 6, 2017. He became the first Dean (R & D) of IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. For a brief period, he was in additional charge of Dean (Faculty & Planning).
He was Head, Department of Electronics Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad from August 13, 2012 to December 31, 2014 where his main focus was to interact with core industries in electronics. Due to the interactions, companies like National Instruments and Texas instruments interacted with students and gave pre placement offers to couple of them. He played a major role in obtaining ‘Fund for Improvement of S & T Infrastructure (FIST)’ project of Rs 1.10 crores from Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. He was also instrumental as Head of the Department in establishment of Centre of Renewable Energy. He was the General Chair of ‘International Conference on Microwave & Photonics ICMAP’ organized in years 2013 and 2015.
He has guided 10 PhD students and 7 students are presently registered for PhD with him. He has over hundred publications of which over 35 are in SCI/SCIE indexed international journals. He received ‘Best Researcher Award of ISM’ for Year 2014 from then Honourable Minister of HRD – Madam Smriti Zubin Irani.
As Principal Investigator (PI), he has procured and completed R & D Projects of over Rs 1 crore sponsored by Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Ministry of HRD, in areas of Erbium Doped Fiber (EDF) Amplifiers and EDF Multiwavelength Tunable Source. Currently, he is PI of Department of Science & Technology (DST) project on ‘Optical Weighbridge’. Apart from R & D Projects, he was Consultant in Charge (CI) of Professional Development Programs (PDP) for participants from Industry and Academia generating a revenue of over Rs 8 lakhs.
In Phase 1 of Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP – 1) of Government of India, he was selected as ‘Performance Auditor/Mentor’ by State Project Facilitation Unit (SPFU) and National Project Implementation Unit (NPIU). He contributed constructively for institutes like BIT Sindri, Ranchi Polytechnic and Dumka Polytechnic under SPFU and NIT Jamshedpur under NPIU.
He is a Senior Member, IEEE, Member, OSA, Member, SPIE and Fellow OSI and Indian Institution of Engineers. He is a Faculty Advisor, Students’ Chapters of OSA and SPIE.
He has done his PhD (Year 1990) in Fiber Optics from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and D. Engg.(Year 1996) in Electronics & Information Science from Kyoto Institute of Technology, Kyoto, Japan. He has been Visiting Professor at Kyoto Institute of Technology, Kyoto, Japan (June 1 to August 31, 2000), University of Colorado, Boulder, USA (June 1 to August 31, 2013), City University, London, UK (June 15 to July 15, 2015), and Aarhus University, Herning, Denmark (June 1 to July 15,2018).
